1. SEPARATE REALITY FROM PERCEPTION

Ask yourself what is really going on, find the facts, and put them over your feelings.

2. IDENTIFY THE TRIGGER

Figure out what it is in a situation that makes you upset. Learning to recognize it will help you learn how to fight it.

3. KNOW WHERE FEAR LIVES IN YOUR BODY

A lot of the time, fear takes over physically. It affects different people in different ways. Find out if and how it affects your physical body and do the work to take care of your body. For example, if you hold stress in your back, you can learn stretches, foam rolling, etc. to stop the pain.

4. PRACTICE GRATITUDE

Every day, write down 1-3 things you are thankful for. Regardless of size, gratitude helps shift the mind into a positive light, which, over time, helps overcome fear.

5. LISTEN TO YOUR INNER VOICE

Listen to your thoughts. If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, don’t tell it to yourself. Say nice things to yourself and remind yourself of your strengths.

6. CREATE A NEW ASSOCIATION

Don’t forget that the feeling and the moment will pass. Focus on the good outcome of the situation rather than the scary parts in between.

7. LOOK AT THE GLASS HALF FULL

Perception is a very powerful thing, and how you feel about a situation will determine how you respond to it. So, if you think positively, you’ll give yourself a much better chance of succeeding. This won’t happen overnight, so practice with just one thought. What’s one negative or scary thought you keep having? Work on changing this one thought. In time, this will become a habit.

8. PRACTICE BREATHING EXERCISES

Breathing helps you stay in control of your body. When you stop breathing, your heart stops beating. You can do a grounding exercise or just take 5 deep, long breaths at any time to calm down and get back to your center. It is best to do this first thing in the morning, but you can practice all day if you want to.

9. CREATE A SAFE SPACE

When you feel safe and secure, there is no reason to worry. Find a safe place where you can go when you’re feeling bad. This could be a real place, like your bedroom, or a place in your mind, like the beach. This sense of comfort will calm you down and help you face your fear.
